Lecce, the Baroque 'Queen of the South,' is the chic capital of Salento and is just 20 minutes away. It is best explored in the cool of the morning when everything is open and bustling, or in the evening for a leisurely stroll through the backstreets to discover the artisan workshops and studios, which are numerous and ever-changing.

The major attractions, such as the trulli capital of Alberobello, the white hilltop town of Ostuni, or the Venetian harbor of Monopoli, can easily be visited on a day trip. However, the real beauty lies in a leisurely drive that allows you to explore the smaller surrounding villages and enjoy the scenic views along the country roads. Set a course for Corigliano d’Otranto for a coffee or a cocktail at the bar in the castle, then continue on to enjoy lunch by the sea in Otranto—a perfect day out for both fine and inclement weather.

Maglie is a lovely, lively town ideal for browsing, while Copertino is known for its connection to students as the birthplace of St. Joseph, the patron saint of study. His tiny abode is preserved as a chapel within the church dedicated to him. Charming and chic Tricase is located near the Adriatic coast and boasts fabulous seafood restaurants. A drive from Santa Maria di Leuca at the tip of Salento through Castro to Otranto will take you along a breathtaking clifftop road with plenty of options for a swim, lunch or just a gelato along the route.
